The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration in Romania, through the General Directorate for Regional Development/ Directorate for Regional Policies and Strategies, coordinates as Project Leader the implementation of the “Common Strategy for Sustainable Territorial Development of the cross-border area Romania-Bulgaria.” The project is being realized with the support of eleven partners from Romania and Bulgaria.
The project has a strategic character, both through its objectives and expected results and through the complexity of the partner’s specificity (12 partners from fields like: spatial planning, databases, human resources, economic competitiveness, tourism, land reclamation, etc.). Therefore, the drafting of this common territorial strategy for the cross-border area Romania-Bulgaria will ensure the creation of a common framework, a common vision of the territory that has common characteristics and would transform the peripheral area in a connector of flows in Southern and Eastern Europe. The project will use the territorial capital to facilitate competitiveness and innovation for the entire area of the program and also to protect and improve the environment.
Taking into account the next financing period (2014-2020), the two countries are supported in identifying and prioritizing the interventions with a big impact for the cross-border area, in relation with the EU development context and priorities. Furthermore, this strategy can be used as a more focused part of the EU Strategy for the Danube macro-region.
The main results assumed through this project are: a common territorial development strategy for the cross-border area Romania-Bulgaria, a common territorial database and cartographic support for the cross-border area Romania-Bulgaria, sectorial and integrated pilot projects and a regional brand for the cross-border area Romania-Bulgaria.
